Raymond E. Knowles, age 71, a lifelong resident of Plainville, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his adoring family, following a brief illness on Friday, August 20, 2021 at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro.
Born in Attleboro, MA on June 2, 1950, he was a loving son of the late William E. and Esther F. (Whitcomb) Knowles.
Ray grew up in Plainville and was a 1968 graduate of King Philip Regional High School in Wrentham. He continued his studies, attending the University of Maine in Orono.
Prior to retiring, Mr. Knowles was employed as a metallurgist at the former American Superconductor in Ayer and was had previously worked for many years at the former Englehard Industries in Plainville.
Ray was a brilliant man who had the ability to build or create just about anything with his hands. He enjoyed the great outdoors, gardening and was an ardent reader on all subjects of science and history. He also enjoyed his small circle of friends for over fifty years and will always be remembered for his loyalty, loving mannerism and the exceptional kindness be bestowed upon the cats that frequented his home throughout the years.
He was the devoted father of Raymond S. Knowles and his wife Mio of Sumner, Maine and Shannon F. Boyd of Rhode Island. He was the cherished grandfather of Michaela Knowles of Austin, Texas. He was the dear brother of Judith Deslaurier of Taunton, Patricia Fernandes and her husband Augie of Norton and is also survived by his loving nieces and nephews.
Services and burial will be private and visiting hours are omitted.
