Virginia A. Arias-D’Limas, 92, of Rutland and New York City passed peacefully Wednesday, August 18, 2021. She leaves a daughter, Iliana D’Limas and her husband Mullen Sawyer of Rutland, MA; a son, Irving Gonzalez of Rutland, MA; four grandchildren: Evan, Jasmine, Emma, and Erika; extended family on both shores of Florida and Cuba; as well as in-laws Nancy Sawyer and her husband Omar Gassama of Worcester, MA, Judene and Sean O’Connell of Rutland, MA, and Sharon and Liam MacDonald of Worcester, MA. Virginia also leaves her chosen sister and brother, Juana Nunez and Generoso Falcon both of New York, NY. She was predeceased by her husband, Erasmus Casal-D’Limas, in 1969.

Virginia was born in Havana, Cuba the daughter of Alberto and Elena (Valor) Arias. She lived in Cuba for 30 years receiving her bachelor's degree as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse, immigrating to the United States with her husband, due to the Cuban Revolution. Her career spanned various vocations including owning restaurants and a bookstore; eventually retiring as a Certified Nursing Assistant after 25 years of service, while living in New York.

Virginia was a dedicated mother to her children and took phenomenal care of her son who has cerebral palsy. She took great pride in her children and grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. She had a keen sense of adventure and traveled often with others, even venturing off on her own. No celebration was complete without Virginia’s spirit, lending her voice, joy, and stories, she lit up a room. Her family extends their appreciation and thanks to Barre Healthcare Center, UMass Memorial Healthcare and Rose Monahan Hospice House for the loving care Virginia received.

Her funeral is Tuesday, August 24th with a service at 1:00 p.m. in O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue. Burial will follow in Rutland Rural Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 12:00 p.m. until the time of the service in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers please make donations to St. Joseph’s Abbey, 167 N.
