Obituary

Donald L. Blake, 62, of New Bedford passed away suddenly on Friday, August 13, 2021.

Born in New Bedford on December 13, 1958, he was the only beloved son of Donald and Claudette (Carr) Blake. Donald was a lifelong resident of New Bedford and a graduate of New Bedford High School class of 1977. After high school, Donald spent time in the Navy on the U.S.S. Suribachi. His time at sea gave him the opportunity to meet and make friends with many who are still in his life after all these years. When his service was over Donald worked at the Department of Corrections as a corrections officer at Bridgewater State Prison where he retired in 2014.

Donald enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family and great network of friends around the country. He was especially proud of his work with the Assonet Band of the Wampanoag where he served in ceremonies with tribal elders. An avid crafter, he created paintings and objects that celebrated his Native American heritage.

He is survived by his sisters Loretta (Lee), Alyse, and Michelle Blake of New Bedford, and his niece Lee Alyse, and nephews Michael and Aaron Perry. In addition to his immediate family, he is survived by his former wife Laurie White of Newton. He cherished the relationship he had with his wife’s children, Chrissie and Laurie and their children.

His wake will take place on Thursday, August 19 from 5-7 PM at Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals at 495 Park Street, New Bedford. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Donald’s memory to the Southwest Reservation Aid at 1310 E. Riverview Drive, Phoenix, AZ 85034. A memorial service will be held in Donald’s memory in the fall. For online condolence book, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
