Herbert L. Gurney, age 91, of Brockton, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 16, 2021, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late F. Janet (Akesson) Gurney. They married in 1954 and bought their home where he lived for the last 64 years.
Born and raised in Brockton, he was the son of the late Howard A. and Blanche C. (Lucier) Gurney and was a 1950 graduate of Brockton High School.
He was a hard worker and for many years was employed in the shoe industry in Avon and Brockton. He began his career at Avon Sole and retired at the age of 62 from Thom McAn Warehouse.
An avid golfer, he was a longtime member of the Easton Country Club and of the “Gurney Group.” Herbert enjoyed taking care of his yard and maintaining his pool. He loved his cats and was especially proud of his grandchildren.
Mr. Gurney is survived by his two daughters Debra Hathaway and Donna Gurney of Brockton; his beloved granddaughters April Hathaway and Paul Cicciu, Holly Hathaway and Greg May, Taylor Janet Hutchings and John Cocco; six great grandchildren: Alexis, Devin, Jacob, Victoria, Anthony, and Gregory. He is also survived by his nieces Patricia Akesson and her children, Eric, Mark and Dawn and Nancy Chausse. Herbert was predeceased by his brother Arthur Gurney and his wife Elaine Gurney, his sister Dora Chausse and her husband Pete and his brother in law Allan Akesson.
Visitation will be held at the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton, Thursday, August 19, 2021, from 10am to 12pm with a funeral service at 12pm. Burial will follow in Melrose Cemetery, Brockton.
