Mrs. Cordelia M. Overhiser, of Woburn passed away peacefully Monday, August 9, 2021, at the Winchester Hospital, following a brief illness. She was 102 years of age. Cordelia was the beloved wife of the late John C. Overhiser. Born in Wallkill, NY and was one of eight children of the late Joseph W. and Lizzi Belle (VanKleeck) Monell.
Cordelia has been a Woburn resident for many years and prior to her settling in Woburn she lived in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania for different periods of time. Cordelia found great strength and comfort from her faith and was always active with her local church throughout her life. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Tenafly, NJ where she sang in the Chancel Choir and practiced her faith. Cordelia loved music and the arts. She was a talented painter and artist herself, working in mostly oil paints and watercolors. She also served as a docent at the Brandywine River Museum of Art in Pennsylvania for many years.
In her leisure time, Cordelia enjoyed playing bridge with friends and was also an avid golfer and member at the Woburn Country Club where she played many rounds well into her 90's. However, one of Cordelia's greatest joys throughout her life was travel. She was fiercely independent and traveled all over the world as well as traveling domestically with family and friends or even traveling alone whenever she felt the urge to explore a new place. She thought nothing of packing her bags and setting out on a new adventure. Cordelia will fondly be remembered by her family and friends for her no-nonsense attitude, strong will and independence. She will be greatly missed.
Cordelia is lovingly survived by her daughter; Kathryn O. Valone of Winchester and her fiancé Dominic Marcellino, and grandchildren, Lauren Valone of Seattle, WA and Chris Valone of Somerville, MA. She is also survived by her niece Jo Monell of Waltham, many more loving nieces and nephews and her beloved K9 companion Zorro.
Cordelia is sadly predeceased by her daughter, the late Jean A. Overhiser, and her siblings, Bertha Nelson, Borden, Bill, Donald, James, Bruce and Lloyd Monell.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend a memorial service that will be conducted in the McLaughlin - Dello Russo Family Funeral Home, Tuesday, August 17th, at 11 a.m. and visit with the family prior to the service from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, tribute contributions may be made in Cordelia`s name to the Brandywine River Museum at Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art P.O.
