Edward F. Leary, Jr., 93, passed away on Friday, August 6, 2021 at the Lowell General Hospital. He was the widower of the late Elizabeth V. (Joaquim) Leary who passed away in 2015 after 57 years of marriage.
Mr. Leary was born in Cambridge on February 15, 1928. He was raised and educated in the Cambridge area. As a young man he was a gifted athlete and was recruited and signed by the Chicago Cubs. He pitched for Chicago’s AAA affiliate team before his service to the country during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1947 and was a recipient of the World War II Victory Medal. After the war he worked as a letter carrier with the United States Postal Service in Everett where he was married and started to raise a family.
In addition to being a professional baseball player in his youth he also enjoyed great success playing pool. He was known locally as a sharp player and won countless local tournaments.
He is survived by his children, Edward J. Leary of Marlborough and Diana C. Leary of Lowell, his daughter in law, Judith M. Leary of Framingham and his son in law, Rithy Uong of Lowell. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Stefanie A. Leary of Woburn, Stacie A. Leary of Framingham, Ravy E. Uong and Edward R. Uong both of Lowell.
