Obituary

Daniel J. Bates, Jr, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, August 7th. He was 72. A life-long Medford resident, he was the son of the late Daniel J and the late Catherine V. (Mulchahy) Bates. After graduating from High School, Daniel served in the US Airforce during the Vietnam War, attaining the rank of Sergeant. After his discharge, Dan worked as a rigger and truck driver for many years. He also worked as a custodian with Medford Public school, before his retirement. Dan was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He enjoyed playing men’s softball for many years and was also a member of the Redskins Club of Medford and the Medford Lodge of Elks. He enjoyed times with family and friends and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.


The beloved husband of the late Denise M. (Riley) Bates, Dan was the devoted father of Michelle Mannke, Daniel “Dapper” Bates, Michael Bates and Shawn Bates. He was a loving grandfather to Amanda and Robbie Mannke and a loving great-grandfather of Devin and Maya Krasco and Charli Presterone. Daniel was a dear brother to William H. Bates and his late wife Phyllis, Robert K. Bates and his wife Sandra, Maureen Howe and her husband Robert, Mark Bates and his wife Kathy, Brian P. Bates and his wife Joan, Denise Guarino and her husband Gerald, Andrea McGrath and her husband Kevin, Pamela Hale and her husband Jeffrey, Kim Pease and her husband Robert as well as the dear brother-in-law of William Riley and his wife Rosselle, Steven Riley and his wife Barbara, and Ricky Riley and Rhonda. Dan also leaves many devoted nieces and nephews.

Daniel’s funeral will be from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St. Medford on Friday August 13 at 9 AM followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Joseph Church, 118 High Street, Medford, at 10 AM. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend and may visit with the family on Thursday from 4 – 8 PM.
