Gladys Afolabi-Buraimoh was born Risikatu Alaba Afolabi in Owo, Ondo State, Nigeria to the family of the late Chief Titilayo Afolabi and the late Madam Mariatu Mopelola Afolabi on January 23, 1959. Gladys was the third of her mother’s children. During her time at Owo High School, she heard the call of the Good Shepherd and converted to Christianity - becoming born again as Gladys after being baptized. She graduated from Owo High School in 1976. Thereafter she worked at Ashamu’s Farm in Isolo and later at Barclays Bank Marina Lagos (now Union Bank). She proceeded to the United States of America for further studies in December 1981. After completing two years at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, she transferred to Norfolk State University in Norfolk, VA where she met the love of her life and future husband, Abayomi Buraimoh. Gladys graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Finance from Norfolk State University in 1985 and soon after she moved to Indiana with her husband who was pursuing graduate studies there. In November 1985, the happy couple was blessed with their first son, Ayodele.
After the birth of their son, Gladys and Yomi moved from Indiana to Boston. She worked briefly at the Marriott Hotel and had a successful banking career at Boston Savings Bank which has now merged with Citizens Bank. Gladys was encouraged by a friend to go into nursing in 1990 and eventually she became a Registered Nurse. While in nursing school in 1991, she started working at the Boston Center for Rehabilitation now called Spaulding Rehab. She worked there for over 20 years and rose to become the Night Nursing Supervisor. After a long career at Spaulding, she continued her career in nursing - briefly working at Highpoint Treatment Center before proceeding to work at Bournewood Hospital until God called her home.
Gladys was a loving, caring and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was a woman of enormous strength, courage, generosity, and kindness. Her charitable spirit and generosity touched the lives of many people who came into contact with her. Gladys was the definition of Hebrews 13:2: “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” She was always kind and welcoming to everyone, including strangers. Her children's faith, character, development and success were always at the forefront of her mind.
Gladys was a people person who would do whatever was necessary to assist and help anyone. Above all, she loved God and was a prayer warrior. Therefore, it pleased God to take her home to glory and to be with our sovereign Lord on August 2nd 2021.
