SPRINGFIELD – Isabel A. “Babe” (Battles) Heffernan, 88, of the East Springfield section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Wednesday, July 21, 2021. She passed into Eternal Life at East Village Place in East Longmeadow surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born in Westfield on October 1, 1932, a beloved daughter of the late Bernard P. and Mary Ellen (Sullivan) Battles. She was raised and educated on Hungry Hill in Springfield and later moved to East Springfield. She was a communicant of the former Our Lady of Hope Church in Springfield. Following the closing of her parish, she became a communicant of Mary, Mother of Hope Church in Springfield where she also was a member of the Women's Guild and Craft Club of the Church. Her proudest accomplishment in addition to raising her six devoted children was taking classes with her friends to study at the Dominican Monastery in West Springfield where she achieved her goal and was professed in the Third Order of Saint Dominic, taking the name of Sister Ann. Above all, she was a wonderful homemaker to her large family and enjoyed spending time with her family and many friends. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and soul mate, James K. Heffernan, Jr. who was Called Home on September 3, 2006. They were married on October 19, 1949 at the former Our Lady of Hope Church in Springfield and were blessed with over 56 years of happiness together. She leaves her six loving children, Patricia A. Carlin and her husband, Timothy, of East Longmeadow, Mary E. O'Brien and her husband, George, of Springfield, Geraldine A. Elias of Agawam and James K. Heffernan III, Susan M. Carey and her husband, William, and Timothy J. Heffernan and his wife, Denise, all of Springfield; her 17 cherished grandchildren and 35 cherished great grandchildren; her dear sister, Regina Griffin of Springfield; her dear sister in law, Pamela Connors of Chicopee; and her many dear nephews, nieces, grand nephews, grand nieces, cousins, family members and friends in her extended loving Irish family. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her loving son in law, Antoine Elias who was Called Home on April 15, 2020; her dear brother, Bernard P. Battles III and his first wife, Georgette; her dear brother in law, Lawrence J. Griffin; and her dear nephew, Bernard P. Battles IV. Her family would like would like to thank the kind and caring staff at East Village Place and the staff of Baystate Hospice who assisted Isabel and her family through her final days, especially her kind and compassionate nurse, Erin. Her Funeral will be held on Tuesday morning, July 27, 2021 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Mary, Mother of Hope Church, 840 Page Boulevard, Springfield, MA 01104. Her Burial will follow the Mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 421 Tinkham Road, Springfield, MA 01129.
