Florence L. (Davenport) Sexton, 96, of East Bridgewater, died on July 17 at the Season Hospice House in Milton. She was the wife of the late Edward J. Sexton, Sr. for 58 years.
Florence was born in East Bridgewater, daughter of the late Charles E. Davenport and Adeline (Palmeiri) Cameron. She attended Whitman Schools and was a graduate of Brockton High School, Class of 1943. She also attended Williams School of Business and was employed in the office of Alden Products Co. in Brockton until her first child was born in 1950.
In 1975, after her children were grown, she enrolled in the Special Education Program at Bridgewater State College. She graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1979 and was employed as a Special Education at the Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School in Easton for 18 years.
Mrs. Sexton was a past President of the Women’s Club of East Bridgewater, member of the East Bridgewater Democratic Committee, serving as Vice Chairman and was a delegate to many conventions. At town elections she served as a warden for many years. She was a longtime member of the East Bridgewater Conservation Committee and served for over 30 years on the Advisory Board of the East Bridgewater Practical Arts Program. During World Wat II Mrs. Sexton was a member of the Whitman Revue, a U.S.O group that travelled to entertain troops at Military Installations. She was an acrobatic dancer.
Florence summered in Dennisport on Cape Cod, enjoying her grandchildren and wintered in Spring Hill, Florida. She travelled extensively in the United States and Europe, accompanying her husband in his military activities.
She leaves a son, Edward J. Sexton, Jr. of East Bridgewater, a daughter, Ann L. Dennis of Port Charlotte, FL, a daughter-in-law Sharon Sexton and a son-in-law Kevin Dennis and three grandsons, and predeceased by two sisters and two brothers, Peggy Lawson of Brockton and Adeline Anderson Bettors of NH, Charles and Donald Davenport of Whitman. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, Chester Anderson of FL, Russell Davenport of Whitman, Stacey and Daniel Lawson of Brockton
Family and friends are invited to attend her visiting hours on Tuesday July 27 from 6:00-7:00 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 at the rotary circle) Whitman. All other services will be private.
