Stephen B. Smolenski of Sturbridge, Ma formerly of Charlton, Ma passed away Tuesday June 29, 2021 at the age of 54, peacefully following respiratory failure at Umass Memorial Medical Center, Worcester, Ma.
He is survived by his Mother, Barbara( Coutermarsh) Smolenski of Masonic Home in Charlton, as well as sisters; Holly Smolenski of New Braintree and Heather McElroy of Southbridge. He is also survived by Heather's children; a niece, Maggie McElroy and nephews; Michael and Matthew McElroy in addition to aunts and cousins.
Steve was predeceased by his father, Steven B. Smolenski who passed in 2002. He was very close to his Aunt the late Marj Tucci, predeceased by cousin Greg Tucci and by his late Uncle George Coutermarsh (whom he enjoyed fishing with) all of Sarasota, Fla.
Steve liked to be called "Elvis" after his favorite performer. He collected all kinds of Elvis memorabilia. He studied Elvis' moves and could dance just like him. Steve made friends with people everywhere he went. He enjoyed going to flea markets and yard sales with his Mom in search of Elvis memorabilia and the "locals" would often hold things for him.
Steve attended Mercy Center in Worcester playing basketball on their team as well as participating in Special Olympic events namely the 100 and the 50 yard dashes, and softball throw.
He was an exceptional swimmer, which was especially important to his dad. Steve enjoyed participating in the Center of Hope and Knights of Columbus dinner dances.
He was an avid wrestling fan and loved all animals especially dogs and horses. Steve won trophies for his bowling skills playing with "The Gutterballs team."
Through the Center of Hope, Steve was able to work at McDonald's on the Mass Pike in Charlton where he once earned the title of Employee of the Month. He also worked at Stop & Shop in Sturbridge.
He was very close to all of his friends at his grouphomes and would often joke with and tease them.
The family would like to thank his team of dedicated, compassionate caregivers at UMass Hospital.

followed by a Mass at 11:00 a.m.
Burial will be private at a later date .
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Center of Hope or Venture Community Services, both of Southbridge. MA.
The ROBERT J. MILLER-CHARLTON FUNERAL HOME, 175 Old Worcester Rd. is assisting the family with arrangements.
