Shirley Ann Vance (nee Jones), 86, of Chapin, SC, died on Thursday morning, March 25, 2021 at her residence. She was born on March 12, 1935 in Baltimore, MD, the forth of the five children of Bertha Elmyra Jones (nee Forwood) and Lawrence Leroy Jones.
Shirley was proud to have been a near-lifelong resident of Baltimore City and county, having lived in Hampden, Hamilton, Carney, Parkville, and Govans, among other metro locales. She was a 1953 graduate of Towson High School, and remained in contact with her classmates via attending faithfully every five years the Class of 53’s reunions. In the 60’s and 70’s, Shirley attended Arnolia United Methodist Church and Hiss United Methodist Church. Shirley retired as a Supervisor State of Maryland’s Department of Assessments and Taxation, Baltimore City office. Shirley cheered unwaveringly for her hometown teams, the Baltimore Colts, the Baltimore Orioles, and the University of Maryland Terrapins.
Shirley enjoyed board games, playing cards, crossword puzzles, and word-finds, but what made her happiest was spending time with her beloved family and friends.
She is survived by her: Sons and daughters-in-law, Charles “Eddie” and Peggy Wiser Vance, Ridgely, MD, and Allan R. and Kerry L. Vance, Chapin, SC, three grandchildren, Daniel J. and Laura Vance, Sarah E. Lee Vance, and Reis Ely Vance; six great-grandchildren, Elijah, Nathaniel, Micah, Isaiah, Ryder, and Anna Lee Vance; sister , Patricia Hannibal; sister-in-law, Marie Milburn; 21 nieces and nephews; many great-nieces and nephews; and several cousins.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Charles E. “Buddy” Vance, by her older siblings, Margaret Elmyra Meany, Charles “Bud” Jones, and Lois Henry, by her sister-in-law, Roberta “Bobbie” Jones, and her brothers-in-law, James Meany, William Henry, Robert Milburn, and William “Sonny” Hannibal: nieces, Barbara Jones, Carol Jones Callender, Sharon Henry, and Audrey Milburn, and nephew, William Frank “Billy” Henry; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Shirley was post-deceased by her nephew, Brian Paul Meany, and by her younger sister, Patricia Hannibal.
Her Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 24, 2021, at The Johnson-Fosbrink Funeral Home, 8521 Loch Raven Boulevard, Towson, MD 21286; 410-668-2300; www.jfhmd.com.
