Barbara Duarte (Alves) Bullock, 94, of New Bedford died on April 4, 2020, at Saint Anne's Hospital, Fall River from complications due to COVID-19. She was born in Providence, RI, raised in Brava, Cabo Verde, and returned to the United States as a young woman. She lived in New Bedford and Dartmouth for many years and spent her golden years in Cape Coral, FL. She was the youngest of 9 children, born to the late Antonio Duarte and Claudina Sousa Duarte.
Barbara was a professional seamstress and gifted at knitting and crocheting; she enjoyed cooking and baking. She was a devoted Christian and prided herself on reading her bible daily. She had a sharp wit and a keen sense of humor.
She is survived by her husband of over 30 years, David Bullock, her son John Alves, of Dartmouth, MA; three daughters, Irma Gatrell of Warren, Ohio, Nina (Alves) Williams of Moreno Valley, CA, and Barbara Alves-Farrier of Boston, MA. She was the mother of the late Antonio J. Alves. Barbara was blessed with nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the nursing staff at St. Anne's Hospital for the care and kindness shown to Barbara.
Her Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 47 South 6th Street, New Bedford, MA at 9:00 AM. Burial will be in Rural Cemetery.
