Obituary

Gary J. Winterson, 61, of New Bedford passed away suddenly on Wednesday, July 7, 2021.

Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Gary was the son of Paul K. and Anne "Pat" (Cadigan) Winterson of New Bedford.

After graduating from New Bedford High School, Gary served in the United States Air Force from 1979 to 1983. Shortly after his service, Gary became employed by the United States Postal Service where he worked for 33 years. He took pride in his work, spending most of his career as “the mailman” in the neighborhood he lived and grew up in. He retired in 2017.

Gary enjoyed the small things including good food and spending time with his two children, family, and friends. He was well known for his love of the New York Yankees, walks or drives around the South End beach listening to 94 HJY, and grabbing some beers.

Gary is survived by his parents; his daughter, Stephanie M. Winterson and his son, Nathan D. Winterson of Fairhaven; his brother, Kerry Winterson and his wife, Rebecca; his sister, Kelly Winterson and her companion, Jimmy Rego, all of New Bedford; his former spouse, Debra Winterson of Fairhaven; along with many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was also predeceased by his beloved sister Kristine Winterson.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Lawrence, Martyr Church on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at 10:00 A.M. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Monday July 12 from 4-8 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
