Eleanor (Gilbert) Borges was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts on March 24, 1942. She was the youngest of 13 children born to the union of Maurice and Mary (Tavares) Gilbert. She lived in New Bedford the majority of her life. She entered Heaven’s gates on June 30, 2021.
She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a devout Catholic who attended Our Lady of Assumption Church. She was a hardworking woman who took care of her husband Manuel Borges of 32 years and her two children, daughter Karen (Vieira) Hollins and son José Vieira. For several years she worked at Morse Cutting Tools building drill bits and gears for several major companies until they relocated. She was very good at it too! Her co-workers used to ask her how does she do it because she was small in stature and the gears were very heavy. She used to tell them, “I have to do it to take care of my family”. She loved her family with all of her heart. Her interests were sewing, cooking and browsing the internet. She also loved going to the beach with her husband and spending time with her grandchildren. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her husband Manuel; her children Karen and José; her stepchildren, Antonio Borges and Joaquina Borges; five grandchildren, Tatyana Hollins, Kiara Hollins, Joey Vieira, Nevaeh Vieira, and Scarlet Vieira; her great-granddaughter, Kyla McLaurin; her sister, Rosemarie Jesus; and many nieces and nephews.
Her Funeral will be held on Friday, July 9, 2021 at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by her Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM. Burial will be in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, July 8, 2021 from 4-8 PM. For directions and guestbook, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
