Obituary

David Edwin Halter was reunited with his parents, brother, sister and beloved wife and daughter on June 30, 2021.

Dave was born on July 18, 1932 to Georgia Frances and Edwin George Halter in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the oldest of 3 children including Nancy (Halter) Dacek and Thomas (Tom) Halter. David graduated from Shaker Heights High School, attended Georgetown University and went on to earn a degree from Case Western Reserve where he met the love of his life, Joan (Vajnar) Halter. They married in 1955, raised 5 children, and enjoyed more than 60 years of life together with family and friends in Cleveland and Toledo, OH, Grosse Pointe, MI, Hingham, Boston, and finally New Bedford, MA. Dave served our country in the Navy aboard the USS Northampton in the European theatre. He was honorably discharged in 1957.

Dave enjoyed a varied career as a stock broker, investment advisor and fundraiser for nonprofits. His touchstone was Cape Cod where he and Joan honeymooned, and where he continued to return every summer with their growing family. He enjoyed long walks on the beach with many wonderful canine companions over the years, a good scotch, and was a devoted fan of the Cleveland Browns and Ohio State Buckeyes. Dave was a loving father whose greatest joy was spending time with his family. He lived his life surrounded by his beloved biographies of Winston Churchill from whom he took his personal motto, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts.”

Dave is survived and will be missed by his loving children, Cynthia Oberlin, David Edwin, Jr., Susan Halter, and Robin Khan along with 12 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. The family will hold a memorial service graveside at Knollwood Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio at a future date.
