FALL RIVER – Lydia T. Gonsalves, age 72, a lifelong resident of Fall River, passed away on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 in the comforts of her home with her loving family by her side. Lydia was the daughter of the late Augustine and Maria Teresa (Couto-Cabral) Gonsalves.
Prior to retiring, Lydia worked as a school teacher for the Fall River School Department at the Davol School for many years. She was a faithful parishioner of St. Michael’s Church and a recipient of the Marian Medal.
For many years, Lydia was in charge of the Bazaar at St. Michael’s Church and a volunteer at the Great Feast of the Holy Ghost at Kennedy Park. In her pastime, Lydia loved to play bingo and try her luck in the casinos near and far. She loved to travel and was a diehard New England Patriots Fan, having been a season ticket holder for many years.
Survivors include her sister: Maria Theresa Tavares (husband Ernest) of Fall River; beloved nephew and caretaker: Michael Aguiar of Fall River; niece: Elizabeth “Betty” Furtado of Fall River; nephews Ernest Tavares of GA, Joseph Aguiar of VA, and Andrew Gonsalves of Assonet; several great nieces & nephews. Lydia was the sister of the late Maria C. “Connie” (Gonsalves) Aguiar, Maria Helena (Gonsalves) Aguiar, and Augustine F. “Gus” Gonsalves.
Lydia’s funeral will take place from the Manuel Rogers Funeral Home, 1521 N. Main St., Fall River, MA. on Tuesday, July 6th here at 8:45 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Michael’s Church at 10:00 A.M. Interment in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
