Limington - Robert V. Axelsen, 84, died at his home surrounded by family on June 21, 2021. He was born in Limington on October 8, 1936 a son of Charles and Christine (Higgins) Axelsen. He was educated in Limington schools and was a graduate of Limington Academy. He proudly served in the Army National Guard for 14 years. He married Beatrice Harmon on May 3, 1957.
Bob was a truck driver for most of his career. He worked for St. Johnsbury Trucking Co. for many years, then later drove many more years for Nissen Bakery. After his "retirement", he drove delivery for Scarborough Auto Parts for several years, and also drove for the Limington Rescue for over 10 years.
He was very involved with the Town of Limington, including serving on the budget committee, planning board and was a ballot clerk. Bob had also served as FEMA director for York County, and was a member of the Adoniram Masonic Lodge in Limington. Bob and Beatrice were longtime members of the South Limington Baptist Church.
In his spare time Bob enjoyed fishing, camping and gardening. He and Beatrice loved going for car rides with Herbert and Marion Ramsdell. Above all he enjoyed spending time with his loving family.
Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his beloved wife Beatrice who died in 2015. Surviving are his three sons: Joel Axelsen and fiance Wendy Lane of Waterboro, Daniel Axelsen of Limington and Robert Axelsen II and wife Mary of Limington. Two brothers, Melvin Axelsen and wife Sylvia of South Portland, and Leland Axelsen of Standish. Five grandchildren: Courtney Hebert and husband Shawn, Derek Axelsen, Lacey Axelsen, Robert Axelsen III and Joseph Axelsen. Also one great granddaughter, Addison Hebert.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 10, at 10 a.m. at the South Limington Baptist Church. Arrangements are respectfully handled by Poitras, Neal and York Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at: www.mainefuneral.com
