Irene (Pontes) Moniz, 93, of Westport, passed away on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Catholic Memorial Home. She was the former wife of the late Joseph S. Moniz.
Born in Fall River, daughter of the late Frank R. and Theresa (Alfonso) Pontes, she had lived in Westport for most of her life. She was a Communicant of St. John the Baptist Church, Westport, where she was the recipient of the Marian Medal in 1977 presented by Bishop Cronin. Mrs. Moniz was a member of the Our Lady of Grace Senior Citizens Club and an honorary member of the St. John the Baptist Women's Guild. She was also a member of the P.A.C.L. of Westport, the Westport Agricultural Committee and a former member of the I.L.G.W.U.
Survivors include a son: Michel D. Moniz of Marshall, TX; 2 daughters: Marlene M. Samson of Westport and Elaine M. Potter and her husband Ronald of Tiverton, RI; a brother: Alfred Pontes of New Bedford; a sister: Zeria Carvalho of Tiverton, RI; 11 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; a great great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the mother of the late Joseph S. Moniz, Jr. and sister of the late Manuel Pontes and Mary Lily Perry.
Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited will be Thursday, June 24, 2021 from the Potter Funeral Home at 9:00 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Baptist Church, Westport at 10:00 A.M.
Calling hours Wednesday from 5-8 P.M.
Interment in Beech Grove Cemetery, Westport.
