Obituary

Talbert H. DeWitt Sr., 96, of Sumner passed away on June 17, 2021 at Lake Haven in Valdosta. A private memorial service will be held for Mr. DeWitt at a later date.

Mr. DeWitt was born on October 6, 1924 in Beaufort, South Carolina to the late James H. DeWitt and Eula Bunton DeWitt. After high school, he went into the United States Navy in 1943, during WWII, where he taught radio classes at the Citadel. After the war, he graduated from University of Florida.

Mr. DeWitt met the former Barbara Jean Grimes and they were married in 1950. He moved his family to Sylvester in 1958 and retired from farming in 1979. He loved walking outdoors and working on the farm.

Mr. DeWitt is survived by his sons, Talbert H. DeWitt, Jr. (Claire) of Ashburn and Thane G. DeWitt of Cambridge, Massachusetts; his daughters, Trinka Stirewalt of Thomasville, Heidi Learn of Tampa, Florida and Schuyler Farmer (Bill) of Sylvester. He is also survived by one sister, Margie Wintz of Ormond Beach, Florida; five grandchildren, Robyn Jean Rojek (Eric) of Leesburg, Lisa Daw (Kevin) of Valdosta, David Blake Gurr of Valdosta, Shelley Crosby of Tampa, Florida and Jennifer McDonald of Sylvester; and nine great-grandsons, Tanner and Travis Rojek, Zackary and Braydon Daw, Cameron Travis, Dylan, and Matthew Crosby and Brim and Ryder McDonald.

Mr. DeWitt was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Barbara J. Grimes DeWitt, seven brothers and sisters.
