Obituary

Through the Gates into a larger life, our beloved Stewart passed on Friday, May 28, 2021, at his home surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Sunday, May 30, 2021, at First Baptist Church in Fitzgerald, Georgia, with the Rev. Dr. Jerry Mahan and the Rev. Blane Jacobs officiating. His son, Stewart G. Carswell, III, will give the eulogy. The committal will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 Saturday evening at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.

Born October 28, 1933, in Fitzgerald, Georgia, Stewart grew up in Abbeville, Georgia. He suffered with rheumatic fever in the 2nd grade and was able to return to school in the 6th grade; however, he was not supposed to live past the age of 35. He was a 1952 graduate of Fitzgerald High School. He furthered his education at the University of Georgia, where he was an ATO. He earned his degree in Forestry in 1956. Mr. Carswell’s life of service to others began when he served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War as a tank commander. He owned and operated Central Music Company for many years and was a friend to all he met. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who shared his talents with many young people, teaching them to love nature as well. Stewart said he felt closest to God when he was sitting in his boat on the river. He was a member and Deacon of First Baptist Church, living a life that was based on a firm faith in God.

Mr. Carswell was a loving husband, father, and Granddaddy to his family. He is survived by the love of his life, to whom he was married for 65 years, LaQuita Renfroe Carswell; their daughter, Benita Carswell; their son, Stewart G. Carswell, III, and his wife Cindy; two grandsons: Nathan Carswell and Logan Carswell; a granddaughter, Abby Carswell; his brother, Fred Carswell and his wife Emilie; and a nephew, Barry Carswell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a nephew, Freddy Carswell.

Knowing our Heavenly Father does all things well, we bow in humble submission to His will.
