Obituary

George Riordan, age 78, of Brockton, died on May 9, 2021 at the Ruth McLain Hospice Home in Braintree, after a period of failing health. He was surrounded by his loving children when he died.

George was the devoted husband of the late Phyllis (Gardner) Riordan for 45 years. He was the son of the late George and Katherine (Sullivan) Riordan.

George was born in Brockton and remained a lifelong resident. He was immensely proud of his Brockton roots. He attended Saint Patrick’s School and Brockton High School, class of 1960, and was an avid Brockton sports fan throughout his life.

After earning an Associate’s degree from Northeastern University, he began working in the Brockton shoe industry. He started his career at Stetson Shoe and then spent over 30 years working as a procurement manager at FootJoy Shoe in Brockton.

George was a passionate sports fan, especially loyal to the Red Sox. He was an avid runner for most of his life, and was proud of finishing the Newport Marathon in 1981. A longtime member of the Brockton YMCA, George was known for his many years coaching Brockton youth sports.

George was a proud and loving husband and father. Dining out with his wife, and watching his children’s music and sporting events brought him great joy. Another favorite pastime was spending summers in North Falmouth with his wife and children. He particularly loved going to Old Silver Beach and the Chart Room.

George will be remembered for his quick Irish wit and his carefree attitude. His sense of humor and easy going nature made him the life of any party. Everyone who met George loved him.

George is survived by his children, Jennifer (Riordan) Hill and her husband, David, of Mansfield, Kevin Riordan and his wife, Moria, of Milton, and Katie Riordan Abramoske and her husband, Bryan, of North Easton; his eight grandchildren, John Flynn Riordan (11), Laurence Gardner Hill (10), Padraig Ames Riordan (10), Catherine Josephine Hill (8), William George Abramoske (7), Margaret Phyllis Riordan (7), Andrew Philip Abramoske (6), and Ava Phyllis Abramoske (2 weeks); and devoted family friend, Kathy Sirois, of Brockton.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday May 17th from 4-7 pm at the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont St. (rte. 123) Brockton. The procession will gather at the funeral home on Tuesday May 18th at 9:30am for a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes at 10:30am. Burial at Coweeset Cemetery.

Donations may be made in George’s memory to the American Cancer Society, 3 Speen Street, Suite 250, Framingham, MA 01701. Masks must be worn and social distancing observed in the funeral home and church.
