Obituary

Regina Beder, age 96, of Westwood MA passed away peacefully in her family’s home in Corona del Mar, California on March 12. Regina Gervinaite was born in Kaunas, Lithuania in 1924 as the youngest of eight children to parents Antanas and Ursula. She graduated high school from the Sacred Heart Sisters Congregation School in Kaunas and during the last years of World War II was forced to flee her country to escape imminent communist occupation and oppression. She lived in Austria and later in Germany where she attended the University of Tubingen for dental studies. In 1949, Regina and several members of her family immigrated to the United States, moving to South Boston. She completed her collegiate studies at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Science - Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene, and was certified as a Dental Hygienist. She enjoyed a wonderful, long and respected career working in the dental field, and was revered and loved by all her patients and work colleagues. Regina married the love of her life, Rostislav Beder in 1957, and the couple eventually built a home and settled down in Westwood. Over the course of their ensuing 52-year loving marriage, they raised two children, Vida and Mark. Regina spoke seven languages (English, French, German, Latin, Polish, Russian, and her native Lithuanian), enjoyed classical music, opera, travel, sports, horses, and dogs. She was particularly fond of enjoying a delicious, boiled Maine lobster dinner! She was an avid and proud member of the Lithuanian Community in Boston and was a singer in her Lithuanian church’s choir. Regina was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her daughter, sisters Stanislava (Tessie), Valerija (Valerie), Marija (Mary), and Stefanija (Stephanie), brothers Albinas, Aleksandras (Alexander) and Antanas (Anthony). She is survived by her son, daughter-in-law Inga, granddaughters Stephanie and Danielle, Nicolette and Alexander, niece Ilona Kybartiene and her family in Lithuania, niece Rita Knight and her family in the UK, nephew Ricardas Gervinas and his family in the UK, nephew Algis Kalvaitis and his wife Suzanne, and their children Kent Kalvaitis and Kathy Penkiunas and their families.
