Mary Evelyn “Evie” McWhorter, 90, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at Dorminy Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 30, at Bethlehem Baptist Church, with Rev. Jerry Wilson and Rev. Roy Conner officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 7 until 9, Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
Mrs. McWhorter was born May 10, 1915, in Wilcox County, Georgia. She was the last of eleven children, born to the late Thomas Clyde and Frances King Ash. She lived in Wilcox County and Ben Hill County all of her life. Mrs. McWhorter was former owner/operator of Mac’s Grocery in Owensboro, a former seamstress, a homemaker and she was known as the “Cake Lady”. She enjoyed baking cakes for her family and friends. Mrs. McWhorter was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
Mrs. McWhorter is survived by her daughters: Wanda J. McWhorter and Juanita Carroll, both of Fitzgerald; grandchildren: Sheila Mann, Lisa Spivey and Melinda Hackett; great-grandchildren: Will Hackett, Ray Hackett, Spencer Spivey, Cariana Spivey, Emme Spivey, Raylee Mann and Daniel Mann. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Henry Tomberlin and Lewis J. McWhorter and a son, Eugene Tomberlin.
