Mary T. Downey, a lifelong resident of Woburn passed away peacefully, May 5, 2021, following a period of declining health. She was 84 years of age. Mary was the beloved wife of the late John A. Downey. Born in Winchester she was the daughter of the late Thomas R. and Elizabeth (Gartland) Harkins.
Mary was raised and educated in Woburn and was a 1956 graduate of Woburn High School. She worked for over twenty years prior to her retirement as a claims intake specialist for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Employment. Mary was a true homebody and enjoyed maintaining and caring for her home, painting ceramics and loved gardening. Her greatest joy was her family and nothing made her happier than to be surrounded by those she loved. She will fondly be remembered for her unconditional love for her family and her always present quit wit.
Mary was the devoted mother of Colleen Delano and her husband Michael of Woburn, Kathleen Driscoll of Billerica and her late husband John Driscoll, Jr., Kevin Downey and his wife Doreen of Melrose, and the late Sean M. Downey. She is also survived by 14 loving grandchildren and 9 loving great grandchildren. Sister of the late Thomas Harkins and his late wife Mary, the late Leo Harkins and his surviving wife Beverly, and the late Bernard J. Harkins. She is further survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held from the McLaughlin - Dello Russo Family Funeral Home, 60 Pleasant St., WOBURN, Monday, May 10th, at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass celebrated in St. Charles Borromeo Church, 280 Main St., Woburn, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. All Attending must wear a face mask and adhere to social distancing protocols. Services will conclude with burial at Calvary Cemetery, Winchester.
