Obituary

Charles E. Smith, 79, of New Bedford died peacefully on May 1, 2021. Born in Mannington, West Virginia he was the son of the late Charles M. and Gabriella Smith. He was the beloved husband of the late Shirley R. (Chevalier) Smith to whom he was married to and loved for 48 years, and devoted father of Dana C. Smith and his wife Aylin Cetik-Smith of Fairhaven.

Charles worked at Alden Corrugated in New Bedford for 27 years. He also worked at Die Technology in Randolph, and later at Meadowbrook Driving Range in Acushnet.

Never one to spare the ice, Uncle Chuck was the proud host of many Sunday morning family gatherings where he enjoyed countless treasured moments with those he loved dearly. He loved to read, listen to music, and play golf, and nothing made him happier than spending time with (and bragging about) his beloved grandchildren Ryson G. Smith of Marion and Leyla M. Smith of Fairhaven.

In addition to his son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren he is survived by his sister-in-law Janice and her husband Jack Perron of Fairhaven, his dear nieces Corinne Wade and her husband Brian of New York, Lynn Aviza and her husband Darryl of Acushnet, and Jane Hubert and her husband Philip of Fairhaven. He was a proud uncle to Connor, Caroline, and Garrett Wade, Paige, Matthew, and William Aviza, Claire, Sadie, and Laura Hubert. ‘Uncle Butch’ was also loved by so many dear nieces and nephews from West Virginia, most affectionately by Karen Fansler, Jerry Looman and his wife Kathy, Rick Looman and Nancy Spragg.

Charles was a proud Air Force veteran and his family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Magnus Veterans Foundation, 16861 North Diamond Lake Rd., Dayton, MN 55327.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Mass on Wednesday May 5, 2021 at 10 AM at St. Mary’s Church, Tarkiln Hill Road. Visitation and burial in Riverside Cemetery will be private.
