Ventura - Alvin James Matthews, 50, passed peacefully away in his sleep on April 17, 2021. Alvin was born on January 21, 1971, in Ventura, CA. Alvin graduated from Buena High School in 1989, worked as a deckhand, then went on to supervise construction projects across the US and around the world. Always seeking adventure, Alvin enjoyed motorsports and running. With a goal of joining the elite ‘Grand Slam Club’ (competing in marathons on all 7 continents,) Alvin ran over 20 marathons on 6 continents, including a 56 mile ultra marathon in South Africa, the Antarctic Ice Marathon and the North Pole Marathon.
In 2014, Alvin was paralyzed in a tragic accident while working overseas. As Alvin said, “When catastrophe strikes, there are 2 possible paths: self-pity or fortitude.” Alvin chose fortitude. Never one for being held back, he persevered and grew independent. Alvin adapted and trained, completing 2 more marathons as a quadriplegic, including the 2016 Los Angeles Marathon.
Alvin's humor and kindness touched the lives of all he came into contact with. Alvin was always grateful for his family and many friends who supported and cheered him on throughout his life. His spirit is carried on by his beautiful daughter Kaylie Raine Matthews, his brother Paul, his mother Sara and many friends from around the world.
A celebration of life will be held at the Ventura Elks Lodge, 2126 Knoll Dr, Ventura, CA 93003, on Saturday, May 15 from 11 - 2:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Alvin’s memory to the Triumph Foundation, 27811 Avenue Hopkins Unit 5 Valencia, CA 91355.
