John P. Gomes, 90, of Acushnet died April 26, 2021 at St. Luke's Hospital.
He was the husband of the late Eugenia D. (Duarte) Gomes, with whom he shared 62 years of marriage.
Born in Brava, Cape Verde, son of the late Pedro and Maria (Gomes) Gomes, he lived in Acushnet for 35 years.
He was formerly employed as a merchant mariner with Exxon for many years until his retirement.
Mr. Gomes enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was an avid New England Patriots fan.
Survivors include his 2 daughters, Jeanette Petruck and her husband Mark of Easton and Joanie Desnoyers and her husband Ron of Fairhaven; a son, John P. Gomes, Jr. and his wife Ana of Middleboro; 3 sisters, Laura Bala and Alice Barros, both of New Bedford and Eugenia Correia of Boston; 4 grandchildren, Jeffrey Barros, Matthew Barros, Monique Desnoyers and Jacqueline Gomes; a great-granddaughter, Liliana Barros; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Jose Gomes, Marcelino Gomes and Clara DaSilva.
His Funeral will be held on Friday, April 30th at 10:15 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at St. Francis Xavier Church at 11:30 AM. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Thursday, April 29th from 4-7 PM.
