Jane M. Tiedemann, R.N., a woman of generous spirit and great humor, passed away peacefully at the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home on April 20, 2021 at the age of 72.
Born in New Bedford, she was the daughter of the late John S. Souza and Estella (Medeiros) Souza. She was a 1967 graduate of New Bedford High School, and then went to St. Anne’s School of Nursing in Fall River, graduating in 1970.
She always knew that taking care of the elderly was her calling, from her days as a student nurse’s aide, to beginning her career as a registered nurse at Sacred Heart Nursing Home, and then at the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home from 1979 until her retirement in 2012. She endured many health struggles in her later years, and was saddened to retire early when she could no longer handle the rigors of the night shift.
She was a fan of country music, restaurant dining, and traveling all over New England. Most important to her was celebrating every holiday and milestone with her family, especially her beloved grandson Dylan.
She is survived by her daughter Patrice L. Tiedemann and her husband Michael P. Grant, her grandson Dylan J. Grant, a sister Patrice L. Washburn and her husband Peter, a brother John J. Souza, five nephews: P.J., Jeffrey, and Daniel Washburn, Andrew and Christopher Souza, her sister-in-law Karen A. Souza, and numerous cousins, great nieces and nephews and many good friends. She is also survived by Paul H. Silveira, whom she considered to be her honorary son.
She was devoted to her family and a great friend. To honor her memory, do something kind for someone in need, and always eat dessert.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday April 29, 2021 at 11 AM at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart Church. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 from 4-7 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. A private family burial will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
