Vernon “Toby” John Kelley, 89, of Ventura, CA, passed away peacefully on 04/01/2021 in Ventura, CA. Toby was born in Sioux City, Iowa to Vernon “Spike” Kelley and Faye Yeargen on 01/20/1932. Toby was raised in Sheridan, Wyoming and was a true cowboy. He enlisted in the U.S. armed forces during the Korean War and served from 1946-1956. Recognizable for his stature, cowboy hat, beard and boots you knew when Toby entered a room. He was known as a ‘Hat Maker’, artist and a respected mentor within the AA community. Toby inspired others with his philosophy, tenacity, craftmanship, and creativity. Golf was a favorite pastime or any opportunity to be outdoors and with nature. Reading, spiritual faith and classic westerns kept him occupied indoors. A bit of a nomad, Toby chose to move about and left his mark in Arizona, Montana, North Carolina, Wyoming and in particular Southern California. The last eight years were spent at the Cal-Vet VA home in Ventura, where he enjoyed exceptional care, comfort, and friendship. He inspired many, aggravated some, but will be remembered by most and loved by many.
Toby is survived by his Son, Wade Kelley of Riverside, Daughter, Kimberly Board of Riverside, Brother, Ron Kelley of North Carolina, and three grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of the JOSEPH P. REARDON FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICE, Ventura.
