Judy Redway, loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, friend, and grandmother, passed away on March 19, 2021 at the age of 79. Judy was born on September 16, 1941 to Mary and Val Hammond. Upon the death of her father a few years later, Judy was adopted by Mary's second husband, David Swanson, and the couple raised Judy, her brother David Jr., and her sister Janet in Brooklyn, New York. Judy later attended Westover School and Vassar College before embarking on her career as an elementary school teacher. Judy had three children, Phebe, Halsey and Elizabeth, through her first marriage and raised them in Riverside, Connecticut, while also spending summers in Buck Hill Falls, PA. In 1983 she married Bill Redway, adding three stepchildren to her family (Will, Laird, and Alicia). Judy retired from teaching in 1992 when Bill's job took them to the DC area, and eventually the couple retired to Marion, Massachusetts.
Judy's spirit and essence were significantly larger than a simple outline of her years. Nothing mattered more to Judy than the people in her life. Judy loved wide and deep. She valued her lifelong friendships from every chapter of her journey, including her boarding school and college friends, her Buck Hill community, her Greenwich Country Day School work friends, her family friends from Riverside days, and her later-in-life friends of Potomac and Marion. Judy made friends everywhere she went, taking time to connect to everyone from the nurses who cared for her to the local storekeepers in the shops she frequented.
Perhaps the people who mattered most to Judy were her family. Judy loved to gather her children, her 11 grandchildren, and her extended family. She created incredible holiday traditions that drew family together from far and wide. She brought a sense of joy and wonder to everyday life, and no one who loved her will ever forget the magic of a snowy day or the hopefulness of spring as seen in the first crocus or robin of the season. Judy loved her furry four-legged friends and the little people in her life. She was at her most magnificent sharing a book with grandchildren in a bedtime "pig pile". But most of all, Judy loved her husband Bill with whom she shared the adventures of everyday life, filled with laughter, kindness, and stubborn independence.
Judy will be greatly missed by all who knew her. A service in celebration of her life will be held Saturday, May 15, 2021 at 2:00 PM at St. Gabriel's Church, 124 Front Street, Marion. In addition, a gathering will occur in Buck Hill Falls, PA on Saturday, July 17th (more details to come). In lieu of flowers, donations in Judy's memory may be made to the Marion Council on Aging, 465 Mill St., Marion, MA 02738, or the Sippican Lands Trust, P.O. Box 848, Marion, MA 02738.
