FALL RIVER – Dr. Gilbert (Gil) R. Cavaco, age 87, of Somerset, passed away on March 19, 2021 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. Born in Fall River, he moved to Somerset in 1974. He was the son of the late Antonio S. Cavaco, born in St. Michael Azores, and the late Wilhermina (Ricardo) Cavaco, born in East Providence, RI. He was also the stepson of Maria Isabel (Raposo) Cavaco, born in St. Michael Azores.
He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War, received an M. ED. and MA from Bridgewater State College and a Ph.D. from NYU, and taught Portuguese and Spanish at both B.M.C Durfee High School and Providence College from 1969 until his retirement in 1993.
He is survived by a great niece, Rebecca (Amaral) Cummings and her husband Stephen Cummings of New Boston, NH and a great nephew, Michael Amaral and his wife Meghan (Farrell) Amaral of Hudson, NH. He was the brother of the late Ruy R. Cavaco and Veva S. Cavaco; the uncle of the late Susan Ann (Cavaco) Amaral who was survived by her husband Alan Amaral and the brother-in-law of Gertrude (Trudy) Furtado.
Following cremation, a memorial mass will take place at St. John of God on Friday, April 9th at 10:00 A.M. Internment in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Somerset. Arrangements were under the direction of the Manuel Rogers Funeral Home 1521 N. Main St. Fall River. www.rogersfuneral.com
