Obituary

Sonja Griswold Morris, 45, of Ocilla, Georgia, died Monday, March 22, 2021, at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida.

Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Friday, March 26, 2021, at the Ocilla Church of God with the Rev. Josh Bowles and the Rev. Clayton Dowd officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery, Fitzgerald. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the sanctuary on Friday.

Sonja was born January 1, 1976, in Fitzgerald, Georgia, to William James Griswold & the late Kathy Elaine Dorminy Griswold. She was a 1994 graduate of Fitzgerald High School and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Valdosta State University in 1998. She worked as a Registered Nurse for Tift Regional Hospital and also did agency work throughout south Georgia. She was a R.N. in Labor & Delivery and Same-Day Surgery at Dorminy Medical Center. She loved sitting on the beach, especially at St. Augustine. She was a thrill-seeker and loved conquering roller coasters, even visiting Cedar Point in Ohio with her family in 2010. She also enjoyed riding motorcycles with her husband and enjoyed spending Christmas week in the mountains the past few years to renew her body and spirit. Sonja was an active member of the Ocilla Church of God. She volunteered with the youth and taught Sunday school. She sang with the Worship Team. She participated in the Easter program, Hell House Project, and other activities including the Women’s Fellowship and Outreach Ministries. She traveled with the Mission Team to Uganda, Africa, in July 2018. She led the Loads of Love clothing ministry that also distributed school supplies and toys at Christmas to families in the community.

She is survived by her husband of 25 years, James Scott Morris of Ocilla; children: James Gabriel “Gabe” Morris and Molly Grace Morris, both of Ocilla; her father, Jimmy & Martha Griswold of Fitzgerald; parents-in-law, Dennis & Lynne Morris of Blairsville and Dan & Iris Henderson of Ocilla; a sister, Johanna Griswold Davis of Fitzgerald; a brother, Capt. Jonathan Scott Tyson, U.S. Army and his wife Heather of Bowling Green, Kentucky; a brothers-in-law, Tommy Davis, Jr. of Ocilla and Steven Morris & Shelley Bullington of Abbeville; as well as nieces and nephews: Jackson, Jude, Carrington, Nicholas, Jonathan, Olivia, Hank and Alec. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her grandparents: George & Virtis Dorminy, William C. “Bill” & Gladys Griswold, and Eugene & Marie Bellflower.
