Charles P. McCarthy, age 84, of Stoughton, formerly of Canton and Charlestown passed away March 19th at the Pat Roche Hospice House in Hingham surrounded by his loving family. Born in Boston, he was raised in Charlestown and graduated from Christopher Columbus High School and then from Boston College, where he played varsity hockey and won a Beanpot Championship in 1961. After Boston College, Charlie represented the United States of America at the 1963 IIHF World Hockey Championships in Stockholm, Sweden. He worked for many years for at several well-known insurance companies selling group insurance before retiring in the early 2000’s. Charlie was active for many years in Canton Youth Hockey and coached at Xaverian Brothers High School. Additionally, he coached for several Boston area hockey clubs such as the New England Colonials, New England Chiefs, South Shore Kings Hockey Club, and the Bridgewater Bandits Hockey Club. Charlie had the great fortune of being able to win multiple league and national championships throughout his years of coaching while coaching his son, Michael, and his grandson, Michael. In addition to coaching hockey, Charlie was involved in Canton Girls Softball and one of his greatest coaching triumphs was coaching his team, The Hustlers, to the league championship. Charlie was an athlete through and through and enjoyed skiing with his family up at Cannon Mountain in New Hampshire. Charlie’s love for the mountains and New Hampshire was spawned from him spending much of his free time at the McCarthy Family Home in North Woodstock, New Hampshire. Charlie and his family had a trove of fond memories up at the East Side Road home, which included taking summer hike in the trails around the home, skiing at nearby mountains, and enjoying the foliage and “mountain air”, as Charlie described it, during the fall.
Throughout all of life’s ups and downs, Charlie always had his beloved wife, Dottie, by his side. His greatest joy in life was raising three children, Kate, Lizzie, and Michael, with Dottie. Charlie was known for being able to talk and tell stories for hours on end and one of his most consistent topics of conversation was his children and grandchildren.
