James W. Hathaway, 71, of New Bedford, passed away unexpectedly at home on Sunday, March 21, 2021. He was the husband of Sandra J. (Makas) Hathaway.
Born in New Bedford, son of the late Joseph E. and Mary (Toomey) Hathaway, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
James graduated from New Bedford Vocational High School, class of 1967, before attending transmission school. He operated Hathaway Marine Transmissions out of his garage for many years. He loved gardening, working on his Koi pond, boating and fresh-water fishing.
James is survived by his wife; his children Michele DeFreitas and her husband Frank of New Bedford, Jennifer Smith and her husband Christian of New Bedford, and Jessica White and her husband John Foster of Atlanta, GA; his siblings, Michael Hathaway and his wife Kelly, Joseph Hathaway and his wife Janice, and Janice Riley; his grandchildren Meagan Hathaway, Elizabeth Gonsalves and her partner Michael Audette, Emily Gonsalves, Matthew White and his wife Mackenzie White, Claire, Helen, and Jane Foster; and three great-grandchildren, Harper and Deacon White, and Alexander Audette; and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral services will be private.
