Obituary




James F. McKinnon, of Plymouth, formerly of Medford, Harwich and Naples, Fla. passed away on April 23, 2020. He was 94 years old. The beloved husband of the late Jean (Brady) McKinnon and the late Jean (Largess) McKinnon, he was a devoted father to Mark McKinnon of Jeffersonville, VT, Marybeth Lang of Tunbridge, VT, Ann M. McCormick and Carol J. McKinnon, both of Plymouth. The dear brother of Leo F. McKinnon, and the late William, John and Robert McKinnon, he is also lovingly survived by six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Raised in Medford, Jim was the son of the late William and Elizabeth (McCarthy) McKinnon. A graduate of St. Clement High School, where he excelled as a student athlete and was the star quarterback, he went on serve his nation during World War II in combat in the Pacific with the Navy. Upon his return he graduated from Niagara University where he was quarterback for their football team and was drafted by the Chicago Bears. He chose to embark on a long career in education and scholastic sports which helped shape the youth and civic cultures of the communities he served. After periods of coaching and teaching at Malden Catholic and Danvers High Schools, Jim became an English teacher and head coach of football, and later a sub-master at Medford High School. As head coach from 1966-1969 he led the team consistently in winning seasons and to the 1967 GBL championship. Jim received many honors for his leadership and coaching. He was also recognized as a great golfer and honored by the Boston Globe for several “holes in one”.

A devoted family man, he and his wife Jean enjoyed a vibrant life, vacationing with their children on the Cape and spending their winters in Naples, golfing at Royal Wood Country Club.

Because Jim passed away last year, during the height of the pandemic, services were postponed. With the passing of his beloved Jean, a funeral mass will be celebrated for Jean and James in St. Raphael Church, 512 High Street, Medford, Saturday March 27th at 11 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend and may visit with the family at church one hour prior to mass. Services will conclude with their burials at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.

Jean Ann McKinnon (Brady) of Plymouth, formerly of Medford, Harwich and Naples, Florida passed away peacefully on March 4th, 2021. She was 92. Born and raised in Malden, she was the daughter of the late Raymond F. and Mary E. (O’Connor) Brady.

A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Jean was also a delightful friend to many. Jean graduated from Girls Catholic High School. After her marriage, she settled in Medford with Jim and went about raising their family. She worked for many years as secretary to Judge Brooks of the Malden District Court. Jean later served as secretary to the dean of Boston University Nursing School and also worked as a realtor. She and her husband enjoyed an active social life. Together they enjoyed golf outings, summers on the Cape and winters in Naples, Florida.

The beloved wife of the late James F. McKinnon, who passed away this past spring, she was a devoted mother to Mark McKinnon of Jeffersonville, VT, Marybeth Lang of Tunbridge, VT, Ann M. McCormick and Carol J. McKinnon, both of Plymouth. The dear sister of Raymond F. Brady and his wife Maureen of Medford, and dear friend and like a sister to Patricia Kenna of Exeter, NH and Mary Buckley of Melrose. Jean is also lovingly survived by six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral mass will be celebrated for Jean and her late husband James in St. Raphael Church, 512 High Street, Medford, Saturday March 27th at 11 AM.
