In Rehoboth, Jean McCarthy, Age 78, passed away peacefully on March 18th 2021 in the comfort of her own home, while surrounded by her family. Jean was born and raised in Taunton. She was the loving daughter of the late Helen and Owen Sr. (Slevin) McCarthy. Jean spent the majority of her life as a resident of Taunton. She also loved her time as a resident of West Dennis, Cape Cod. Jean was a strong advocate for social justice. She was an activist and ally during the Civil Rights Movement. Jean spent over 38 years as a Social Worker for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, serving both children and adults with mental health needs. Jean was a true fashionista who loved shopping and looking “spoofy” and “comfy cozy.” She also enjoyed watching westerns and crime dramas, reading books by her favorite author; James Patterson, and above all, spending time with her beloved family.
Her family includes her daughter the late Tracie (Thetonia) Ouellette and her husband Curtis of New Bedford. Her son Todd Thetonia and his husband Alexandre of Malden. Her step-daughter Rhonda (Thetonia) Paz and her husband Marco of New Orleans. Her step-son Rik Thetonia and his wife Sylvia. Her grandson Brian Thetonia and his wife Adriana. Her granddaughter Nicole Ouellette and two great-grandchildren; Harmony Hernandez and the late Eliana Thetonia. Jean was one of seven children. She is survived by two of her sisters and one brother. She is further survived by her sister in-law and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St Jude the Apostle Church in Taunton on Wednesday, March 24th at 10 AM.
