Jimmy “Popcorn” Freitas passed away peacefully Sunday, March 14, 2021 after losing his battle to cancer while in the care of the VA in West Roxbury. Born the 11th of June 1956 in Fall River, he was the son of the late John and Helen Freitas. He grew up in Dartmouth and then eventually resided in New Bedford for the reminder of his life.
A true “Jack-of-all-trades” he was able to accomplish any job given to him and held many occupations over the years. Always quick to lend a helping hand, he was known for his dedication and hard work of which he often extended to his friends and loved ones.
During the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Navy, and later would serve the community by participating in a multitude of volunteer work through the V.F.W. and other military services. Alongside the members of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 499 he was privileged to commemorate many ceremonies and dedications, and march in parades as a part of the color guard.
His passions revolved around being outdoors and being on the water. He loved camping and fishing, but mostly being surrounded by family and friends and enjoying good company. He was a fan of 50’s and 60’s era including the music and classic cars.
He is survived by his three children, Trevor Freitas and his fiancée Amanda Callahan, Chantel Freitas and her fiancé Chris Szwaja, and Harley Freitas and his girlfriend; his sister Sharon Fletcher and her husband Norman; his former spouse Pauline Turner; seven grandchildren Destiny, Heaven, Lilly, Serenity, Alexis, Logan, Curtis; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother to the late Susan Morse, Sheila Travers, John Freitas, and Joseph Freitas.
