With profound sadness we share that Janice Standing-Roberts, beloved mother, wife, sister and friend, has succumbed to cancer.
Jan was born in rural Lebanon, Missouri, to Glen and Ethel Dawson in 1938. She and her sisters enjoyed the trappings of a happy childhood, including the occasional kerosene tea party and an actual lightening strike.
Jan somehow survived her action-packed childhood and went on to earn her degree at Southeast Missouri State, where she met many lifelong friends. There she also met Billy Standing and they were married in 1959. Together they moved west to Ventura, CA, where they raised their three children. In Ventura, Jan taught at Montalvo Elementary and later worked for the County of Ventura, where she supervised within Children’s Protective Services.
After 42 years together, Jan lost Billy in 2001 to cancer. Thereafter, Jan found George Roberts, and the two were married in 2003. Throughout their 18 years together, Jan and George retired, they explored the world, and they faced this end together with candor, commitment and immeasurable love.
Jan leaves behind her husband George, her son Michael Standing (Dianne), of Forest Grove, OR, son Mark Standing of Grant’s Pass, OR, and daughter Katharine Hullinger of Ventura, CA; she leaves behind beloved grandchildren, Matt and Saffron, James and Stephanie, and sisters Wanda Meyer of Sun City, AZ, and Betty Jo Flaim (Frank) of Modesto, CA, as well as a passel of nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved deeply.
Mass will held for Jan at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at 11:00 AM. A celebration of Jan’s life is tentatively planned for October 23, 2021, in Ventura CA. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation or to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.
Arrangements are under the direction of the JOSEPH P. REARDON FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICE, Ventura.
