Beloved husband of Eleanor (Hickey) Vafides. Loving father of Judith Sproule of E. Bridgewater, James of Braintree, John of Berkley and the late Jay Vafides. Grandfather of George Sproule, Jr. of CO, Sally & Jessica Sproule of E. Bridgewater. Brother of Nicholas, John, both of Hull, Helen of Weymouth, Harry of Concord, NH, Charles of Weymouth, William of Hingham and the late Electra Stetson. Also survived by many nieces & nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM Wednesday at 9 AM. Funeral Mass in Saint Ann's Church, Hull at 10 AM.
Visiting hours Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 PM.
Burial in Hull Village Cemetery.
Mr. Vafides was born in Boston and grew up in Hull attending Hull & Hingham Schools. He graduated Boston Commerce and attended Dean Academy. During WWII, he served in the Army Medical Unit in the European conflict (Italy, France & Germany) from 1943 to 1945. After returning from the war, he settled in Weymouth until returning to Hull in 1960, where he lived the rest of his life. An avid runner, he ran many Boston Marathons in the 1950's and 1960's. He worked many years for the Metropolitan District Commission retiring in 1981. He enjoyed vacationing in Maine and Cape Cod and playing the piano.
