Robert L Smith, age 80, died peacefully at home on Thursday, March 4, 2021. Born and raised in Brockton, he was the son of the late Herbert and Irene (Benoit) Smith. Robert was married to Lorraine (Leedberg) Smith for 58 years and is survived by his three children Robert L. Smith Jr. and his wife Heather, Joseph M. Smith and his wife Michelle and Kim L. Smith; 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Robert was known to his family and friends as Butch, Bob, and Smitty. He was active in the community from the 70’s to the 90’s through his involvement with little league coaching and ward politics. His life work of carpentry spanned 60 years of home- building in southern Massachusetts. Always his passion, Robert took pride in his work and in his knowledge of the industry; he leaves behind numerous properties his hands helped build.
Butch was known as a man who liked to keep busy. His last known work was the stone wall that he hand-built around his property on the southside of Brockton. Over the years, he gathered all the stones from his work sites. He was often seen as he laid each stone, constructing his last masterpiece that will stand for many years to come. It is a true testament to his work and skill to stand the test of time.
