Maria Tranakas passed away peacefully in her sleep Tuesday after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Konitsa, Greece the daughter of John and Vasiliki (Ntangas) Ziogas. It was there that she met and was enamored by a young soldier, Anthony Tranakas. After marriage, they moved to Athens where they raised two children (Nicholas and Dimetra). The family immigrated to America in 1967 to join Maria’s other family members, and for better educational opportunities for their children. Eventually settling in Worcester.
From humble beginnings, they lived the American dream. They educated their children and refurbished an iconic three decker. They were very involved in the Greek community, especially working countless hours for the St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox CathedralFestival. Maria’s generosity extended well beyond her family. Anyone that needed help could count on Maria. She was the family’s rock. Her culinary prowess was legendary. Family and friends craved her creations including her koulourakia, kourabiethes, paximathia and spanakopita with her homemade phyllo. Maria also loved weekly bingo games as well as poker games with family.
Maria is survived by her loving children Dimetra Bernier and her husband, Walter and Nicholas Tranakas and his wife, Anna; her four grandchildren, Marie, Zoe, Anthony and Ileana; and three siblings, Aphrodite Barris, Vasili Ziogas and Irene Ganias. She was predeceased by her siblings, Sophia Tsialiamanis, Diane Louyakis, George Ziogas and Angelo Ziogas.
Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 13th at Noon in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Friday, March 12th from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at O'CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue.
