LONGMEADOW – Demetrius “Jim” Bellas, 93, of Longmeadow, was Called Safely Home on Sunday, March 7, 2021. He passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was raised in the Hungry Hill section of Springfield where he graduated from the former Springfield Technical High School. He served his country in the United States Navy on the USS Cadmus AR14 during World War II and attained the rank of Motor Machinist’s Mate Third Class. He received the World War II Victory Medal. He was employed at the Baystate Elevator Company in Springfield for 50 years and retired as their Vice President of Sales. He was a member of Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Springfield and was also a member of the Parish Council, Building Fund and a former Director of Religious Education of the Cathedral. During his leisure time, he enjoyed gardening. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and his many friends. He leaves his beloved wife and soul mate, Anastasia Bellas. They were married in 1956 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada and were blessed with over 64 years of happiness together. He also leaves his three loving children, George Bellas and his wife, Barbara, Dean Bellas and Cynthia Snow and her husband, Timothy; his three cherished grandsons, James and Joseph Bellas and Nicholas Snow; and his many dear nephews, his niece, cousins and friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his cherished granddaughter, Angela Snow and his two dear brothers, John and Cornelius “Neil” Bellas. Jim will Lie in Repose on Friday, March 12, 2021 from 11 a.m. to 12 Noon which will be followed by a Funeral Service at 12 Noon at Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 2320 Main Street, Springfield, MA 01107. His Burial with United States Navy Military Honors will be private at Oak Grove Cemetery in Springfield. Please note that masks are required, social distancing must be observed and Cathedral capacity is limited due to state regulations.
