Richard P. "Richie" McGonagle, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Saturday, March 6, 2021 at his home in Charlestown. He was 84 years of age.
Richie was born in Boston on May 17, 1936, a son of the late Patrick J. McGonagle and Mary F. (Fleming) McGonagle. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated at St. Francis De Sales Parochial School and graduated from Boston Technical High School in 1954 where he was Class President and excelled as Captain of both the varsity hockey and football teams during his senior year. He furthered his education later in life and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Boston State College. Richie enlisted into the United States Army on January 19, 1955 and served his country faithfully and with honor. He was honorably discharged on January 18, 1957 with the rank of Private. Richie worked for the Boston Gas Company and retired as a Supervisor following 42 years of dedicated employment. He was a member of Bunker Hill Council # 62, Knights of Columbus of Charlestown, 520 Club of Charlestown, and Boynton Beach, Florida American Legion Post and Elks Lodge. Richie enjoyed traveling to Boynton Beach, Florida every winter and in his spare time he enjoyed reading, cooking, playing pool and doing crossword puzzles. Family was paramount to Richie and he cherished the quality and special moments with his daughter and son and most especially his 5 grandchildren.
Richie is the devoted father of Patrick J. McGonagle, Jean M. McGonagle, Danny O'Connell and his wife Lisa and the late Thomas O'Connell. He is the loving "Dad" to Jenna, Patrick, Ryan, Caroline and Ann. He is the former husband of Sheila (Sheehan) McGonagle and the late Joan T. (Gillen) McGonagle. He is the brother of Ann Flynn and the late John P. "Jackie" McGonagle. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Richie's visiting hours on Wednesday morning, March 10, 2021 from 9 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. in The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown at 11 A.M.
