Obituary




Kathryn L. (Wilson) Smyth, 75, of Worcester died Thursday, February 25th in UMASS Memorial Hospital – University Campus. Her husband of 41 years, Peter H. Smyth, Sr. died in 2012. She leaves three children, Peter H. Smyth, Jr. and his wife, Jennifer of Edgartown, MA; a daughter, Heather A. Smyth; and her youngest son, Thomas C. Smyth of Worcester. She was known as “Apple” (aka Granny Smyth) to her beloved granddaughters, Shealyn Heather and Jocelyn Sage Smyth of Edgartown MA who were the light of her life.

She is also survived by two brothers, James Wilson and his wife Sharon of Worcester and Thomas Wilson and his wife, Dianne of Rutland; two sisters, Doris Grant and her husband, Benjamin (Frank) of Greensboro, NC and Linda Smith and her husband, Gary of Ashford, CT; brother-in-law, Christopher Smyth of Bethlehem, PA; sister-in-law, Joanne Wilson of Worcester and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces & nephews who often referred to her as “Auntie Margarita”. She was predeceased by her brother, Richard A. Wilson, Jr.

Kathryn was born in Worcester, the daughter of the late Richard A. Wilson, Sr. and Doris (Wood) Wilson and graduated from St. Stephen’s High School. Retiring in January 2021, Kathryn worked for Stop & Shop as a front-end service clerk for the past ten years and previously for Verizon for over 30 years where she was a member of the Telephone IBEW and UFCW Local 1445. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church. Kathryn enjoyed visiting Martha’s Vineyard and traveling especially to Aruba with her family and late husband, Peter. She was the matriarch of her family and relished the time she spent with family and friends.

Her funeral is Saturday, March 6th from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue with a Mass at 10:30 AM in Blessed Sacrament Church, 551 Pleasant Street. Burial will follow in St. Johns’ Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday, March 5th from 5:00 until 7:00 PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Worcester County Food Bank, 474 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury, MA 01545 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
