Carol A. Thurber, 79, of Burlingame Road, Smithfield, passed away on Monday, February 15th in Bayberry Commons in Burrillville. She was the wife of Alonzo “Lonnie” Thurber. They had been married for 59 years.
Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Stephen and Doris M. (Menzel) Talbee. She had lived in Smithfield for 78 years many of those years she traveled as a military wife.
Carol had worked for AAA at the New England Regional Office for many years and she took great pride in drawing out Trip tic maps for traveling AAA members. She was a member of the Smithfield Senior Center and was an active member in Outreach programs for St. Thomas Church in Greenville.
Carol had also worked many jobs both part-time and full-time that were continually changing due to her husband's military duties. Her favorite job was working for a veterinarian in Vacaville, CA. She had her daily duties in the kennels and was on call for emergencies the rest of the time. She possessed a strong love for animals.
She loved military life. Often, she would take the children to San Francisco or NAPA Valley, California. Fairbanks, Alaska was another one of her favorite spots or go shopping in the little city of Karamusel, Turkey. She was on many NCO's wives’ clubs even playing on the wife's club softball team.
Besides her husband, she leaves her daughter, Donna L. Tafat of Kissimmee, FL. She was the grandmother of Heather and Nicholas Vlchos. She was the mother of the late Alonzo F. Thurber IV.
Her funeral and burial were private. A Memorial Service to which relatives and friends will be invited will be held Saturday, August 14, 2021 at 10am in St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Rt 44, Greenville.
