Obituary

Marie Verity Metcalf, 86, of Mystic, passed quietly in her sleep on Tuesday, February 16, 2021. She was born in New London CT to William J. Verity and Katherine V. Kenure, on September 12, 1934. Marie attended Williams Memorial Institute, graduating in 1953. She spent her entire career at Electric Boat as an administrative aide until her retirement in December of 2000. Marie was a union steward and also an International Vice President of the OPEIU during the 1970's. She was also an artist whose lovely paintings grace the walls of many friends and relatives.

Marie was affectionately known as "Ma" to all of her children and grandchildren and all of their friends. She was predeceased by her parents and younger brother Russell and her beloved son, Charles H. Metcalf III. She recently lost her daughter-in-law, Dolores, whom she adored.

Surviving her are her brother, Thomas W Verity of Niantic, her children, Katherine M. Davis and her husband Charles, Thomas W V Metcalf of North Stonington and James A Metcalf of Mystic. She also leaves her grandchildren, whom she loved with a fierceness only a grandmother could. They are Christopher A. Metcalf, Kathleen E. Johnson (Michael), Ian C. Davis (Taylor), James E. Davis (Kristie), Kendall Metcalf, Michele Walworth (Douglas), and Robert Faiella (Alison). She also leaves 9 great-grandchildren. Marie also had a very special relationship with Alan "Butch" Whitford and his late wife Kathleen. She thought of them as her bonus children and their daughters, Annie, Maryanne, and Arianne as her grandchildren. A special thank-you to Chief Ken Richards, Officer Kristy Murray and Sgt. Keith Beebe for their kindness during a difficult time.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, February 19, at 10:00am at St. Patrick Church, 32 East Main Street, Mystic. Burial will immediately follow in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or JDRF.
