Obituary

John T. McCarthy, 74, of Londonderry, NH, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 in the Derry Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Derry, NH. He was born in Hanover, NH on January 12, 1947, a son of the late Eugene McCarthy and Margaret (Agan) McCarthy. He had been a resident of Londonderry since 1976, formerly living in White River Junction, VT. John was a proud veteran; he served his country as a jet engine mechanic in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. He had been employed as a director of maintenance for Susse Chalet hotels for over 40 years before retiring in 2018. John was a life member and founder of the American Legion Post #27 in Londonderry where he had served as Post Commander for many years and later, as Chaplain. He was also a life member of the Sons of the American Legion and the VFW, and a member of the Sons of Ancient Hibernians. He led and participated in countless projects to help local veterans in need. John enjoyed watching New England sports, and was an active supporter of the Post #27 Legion ball team.

He is survived by three daughters, Jennifer Lewis of Penacook, NH, Mary McCarthy of Plaistow, NH, and Kathryn Hulvey and her husband Andrew of Dumfries, VA; eight grandchildren; his brother, James McCarthy of East Haven, VT, and seven nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Donna (McCartney) McCarthy in 2018, and his brother Dennis McCarthy in 2010.

A walk-through wake with masks, social distancing and limited interaction with the family will be held on Saturday, February 13th from 2 - 5pm in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 290 Mammoth Rd., Londonderry. Following cremation, he will be placed in the NH State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans, PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.
