STURBRIDGE/HOLDEN– David H. McCarthy, 72, of 202 Park Circle, died Sunday, March 19, at home after a courageous battle with cancer.
He leaves his wife of 2 years, Theresa (Lantz) McCarthy; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Joseph Gill, and Patricia “Tic” and Richard Anderson, all of Webster; 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Christopher and Amy McCarthy of Boylston, and Scott and Heidi McCarthy of Webster; 2 sisters, Beverly McCarthy and Loraine Dufault, both of Worcester; 5 granddaughters, 2 grandsons, and nephews and nieces. His first wife of 46 years, Patricia F. (Whalen) McCarthy, died in 2003.
He was born and raised in Berlin, NH, the youngest child of Henry and Anna (Barney) McCarthy. He lived in Holden for many years before moving to Sturbridge in 2000. He graduated from Berlin High School in 1952.
He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War, serving in the sixth Atlantic fleet aboard the attack carrier USS Ticonderoga.
Mr. McCarthy owned and operated Gain’s Express, Inc. in Holden for over 20 years before retiring in 1996.
He was a member of St. Anne & St. Patrick Church in Fiskdale. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a truck enthusiast.
The funeral, with military honors, will form at 8:45 AM Wednesday, March 22, at the Sitkowski & Malboeuf Funeral Home, 340 School St., Webster, followed by a Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Anne and Patrick Church, 16 Church St., Fiskdale. Calling hours are from 5:00 to 8:00 PM Tuesday, March 21, at the funeral home.
