Siranoosh (Sally) Martin passed away peacefully on January 27th, 2021 at age 95. She was born in Cambridge to Mardiros and Vartanoush Avakian. Devoted Mother of Glenn Herosian and his wife Karen of Belmont. Loving Grandmother to Carly, Aria, and Alexis Herosian. Pre-deceased by Haig, Jack and his wife, Ozzie, George, sister Siranoush Avakian, and best friend, Mary Almeida. Cherished Sister-in-Law to Doris Avakian and also survived by many loving nephews and cousins.
Sally was a sociable and ambitious woman. She excelled in real estate and for many years had her own brokerage company in Cambridge. Following her family’s tradition, she was a long-time member of the Holy Trinity Armenian Church in Cambridge where she taught Armenian School and Sunday School. Later, she moved to Newport, Rhode Island, where she enjoyed living by the ocean. She graciously hosted many family holidays and dinner parties at her home, “Villa Rosa”.
Talented in art and photography, Sally attended Christie’s Fine Arts Classes in London, and at age 70, she enrolled at the Rhode Island School of Design. Throughout her life, she loved to travel the world and, as a talented artist, create and collect art. Sally never lacked for adventures, including hot air balloon rides in England, safaris in South Africa, and walking tours of Scotland. She relished her role as the Family Matriarch, whether dispensing wisdom to her family or teaching them how to make chocolate boorma and cheoreg for special holidays.
Sally’s family gives special thanks to the medical staff at the Mt. Auburn Hospital, including Shirley Gillies, and especially her primary care physician, Dr. Kady Goldlist, who surrounded her with comfort and love.
A private burial will be held at the Cambridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Siranoosh’s name can be made to the Holy Trinity Armenian Church of Greater Boston, 145 Brattle Street, Cambridge, 02138 and the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research (N.A.A.S.R.), 395 Concord Avenue, Belmont, MA 02478.
